Summer Academic Program for At-Risk Youth

Allen Metropolitan CME Church sponsored the Center For Academic and Cultural Excellence (CACE) during the months of June and July this year. This program was targeted at academically at-risk youth in the local church community and was implemented in response to a request by local school administrators.  Due to budget cuts in Chicago Public Schools,  the summer school program was not available to their students. The program was staffed by volunteers from the church which included retired and active school teachers.
In the morning, students were taught the following subjects: English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and World History. In the afternoons, they attended the following cultural classes: ballet and tap, Greek, Spanish, Music (which consisted of  singing and learning to play piano, drums, flute and guitar), Drama, Photography and Art.
Each week they were taken on field trips to the Lincoln Park Zoo, DuSable Museum and the Shedd Aquarium and the Chicago Field Museum.
The goal of the program was to enhance and reinforce the educational learning and growth of the student as well as to expand and introduce the student to the arts.
The program provided breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks for students and others who were in need of food.

Visit the 'Be Involved' page to see how congregations and annual conferences are reporting on their faith in action for children in poverty.

Reading the Campaign booklet is a first step for becoming familiar with this initiative. It offers information and resources to encourage your activism. It can be viewed and downloaded at The Campaign page.

We hope that you will contribute information about your work with children. Descriptions of your ministries will be helpful to others who want to deepen their involvement to care for children in poverty.

You can influence the Campaign’s effectiveness.  Be involved.  Offer your ideas.  Encourage others.

Trusting in God, we dare to envision a world in which every child experiences love, care, and hope. Together we can be the difference in the lives of children in poverty.
